Media Regulation and Its Importance

Media plays a powerful role in every society. It shapes what we see, think and understand about the world. But with this influence comes great responsibility. This is why media regulation exists. It protects audiences, especially younger and vulnerable people from harmfu or inappropriate content. In today's world, where children can access Tik Tok, Youtube or violent video games with a single click, the need for regulation is stronger than ever.

Regulation creates a healthy balance between freedom and safety. On one hand audiences should be free to play, watch and explore what interests them. However, on the other hand harmful content such as hate speech, violence, sexual material or dangerous challenges can negatively effect the wellbeing and overall behaviour of people.

Livingstone and Haddon argue that young audiences need a balance between protection and participation.

For example

  •  PEGI game ratings (7+, 12+, 16+, 18+) help parents judge whether content is inappropriate or violent.
  • Film classification boards age rate movies for violence, language, drugs or sexual content.
  • TikTok age restrictions (13+) exist to limit the exposure of adult content, trends or unsafe challenges.
Regulation also has weeknesses. Age limits are easy to ignore. Global platforms make it hard for governments to control content. Something that's offensive for one culture might be alright for another.

Media regulation isn't perfect, but it plays a crucial role in keeping the media spaces safe, responsible and easier to navigate through.
