Features of Postmodernism
Features of Postmodernism
1. Blurring of High Culture and Low Culture
Postmodernism mixes what used to be seen as "fancy, elite" culture with everyday culture.
Example: A luxury fashion brand using streetwear designs.
2. Interteaxuality
Including refrences to other films, TV shows, books, games, music videos etc.
Example: Stranger Things references 80s films like E.T. and The Goonies.
3. Pastiche
Imitation of genres, styles or texts but done playfully, not as parody.
Example: Bruno Mars' Finesse music video copying 90s show in Living Color.
4. Parody
Imitating something but in a humorous or mocking way.
Example: Scary Movie making fun of horror films.
5. Hyperreality (Baudrillard)
The line between reality and fiction becomes blurred, simulations feel more "real" than real life.
Example: Instagram filters, VR games, deepfakes.
6. Fragmented Narratives
Stories that don't follow a clear beginning-middle-end. They may jump around in time or show multiple viewpoints.
Example: Pulp Fiction has a non-linear timeline.
7. Self Reflexivity
Media that is aware it is media. It breaks the "fourth wall" or comments on itself.
Example: Deadpool talking directly to the audience.
8. Mixing of Genres
Combining different genres that normally wouldnt go together.
Example: Horror + Comedy in Get Out.
9. Loss of Originality
Postmodern media often recycles and remixes older ideas.
Example: Sampling old songs in new tracks (e.g Calm Down using older Afrobeats influences).
10. Style Over Substance
Sometimes visuals, vibe, aesthetics are more important than deep meaning.
Example: Music videos that focus on fashion, colour, mood, or aesthetic rather than story.
11. Consumer Culture + Identity
Postmodernism believes identity is fluid and shaped by what we consume (brands, trends).
Example: People expressing identity through fashion like 90s revival or Y2K style.
12. Challenging Truth and Reality
Claims that there is no single "truth" everything depends on perspective.
Example: Multiple endings in games or films that let the viewer choose thier own version of truth.
