Codes and Conventions of a Music Video

Music videos use different techniques to create meaning and keep viewers engaged. These techniques are divided into 2 types:

  • Technical codes - camerawork, editing, sound
  • Symbolic codes - mise-en-scene, colour, costume, props
Both work together to complete the story, style, and mood of a music video.

Camera Work

Camera Angles
Directors use angles to show emotion and power.
  • Low angles make someone look strong or confident.
  • High angles make them look smaller or vulnerable.
Camera Movements
Pans, zooms, and tracking shots help guide the audience's attention.
  • Fast movements add energy
  • Smooth and steady shots help in setting the mood for the video.
Framing
How the character is placed in a shot makes or breaks the scene.
  • Close-ups show emotion and create connection.
  • Wide shots show the full setting and can highlight isolation, power, or scale.

Editing

Fast Cuts
Quick cuts that match the beat increase the energy. These are very common in pop and electric genres.

A collectiomn of short clips showing different scenes or emtions. It can show the passing of time or changes in the character.

Jump Cuts
