What is a Music Video?

A music video is a short film that is made to go with a song and add meaning to it. It helps listeners understand the mood, story and emotions of the music. People dont just listen to songs anymore they watch them. Music videos play a huge part in helping an artist share their creativity and connect with people. 

A Short History of Music Videos

Early Beginnings (1920s-1940s)

The first versions of music videos were called Soundies. They were short musical films shown on special video jukeboxes in cafes and theaters. These early short clips showed basic performances which was the fisrt step towards the modern music videos. 




The TV and Pop Era (1950s-1960s)

When television became popular, musicians started performing on TV shows inorder to promote their songs. The Beatles helped push forward things by making short filmed clips for songs like Paperback Writer




MTV Changes Everything (1980s)

In 1981, MTV launched as a channel that  played videos 24/7. This made videos incredibly important. Artists used them to show style, creativity, dance, fashion and personality. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" became one of the most famous videos ever of that era. 



 

The Internet Age (2000s-Today)

Youtube changed how people watch music videos. Now anyone can watch music videos anytime. Videos can go viral withing minutes and help songs become hits overnight. 





How Music Videos Are Changing Today

Music videos are now:

  • Shorter
  • More focused on storytelling and visuals
  • Made for social media and short attention spans
  • Use better technology like drones, special effects and even AI
  • Playing a major role in branding and building an artist's image
